Many thanks to Steveegg (No Runny Eggs) for discovering an answer to the problem that was driving me nuts.
I forgot to observe the first rule when working with WordPress - Always check the plugins!
I’m not done with the adjustments here, but now I can move forward without being bothered by a broken layout.

WordPress has announced their latest update.
We have a pretty important release available for everyone, it includes an important security fix and it’s recommended that everyone upgrade. This is the latest release in our stable 2.0 line, which we’ve committed to maintaining for several more years.

I’ve spent a good part of this morning making some changes here. Mostly with the plugins (one of the things I really like about WordPress) and the layout. What’s New:
Formating Tag Buttons for comments. Works on the individual page, but not in the comment popup box. I don’t know what the problem is.

Blogrolling.com is still not showing recently updated blogs correctly. That doesn’t help with the blogrolls where I’m a member such as Blogs for Bush or The 101st Fighting Keyboardists, but I have found a nice WordPress plugin for my own bRight & Early blogroll.
