And Rightly So (Duncan Avatar) Professor Liviu Librescu – Hero

Misha over at the Anti-Idiotarian Rott said that the would give the man the Medal Of Freedom, the highest award that can be given to a civilian. That got me thinking. Hell yeah this man deserves this, which honestly doesn’t even come CLOSE to repaying him for his sacrifice. But we sure can honor that sacrifice. There is also the Congressional Gold Medal, which is the civilian equivalent to the Congressional Medal of Honor. Both are appropriate in my mind. So I went and sent traffic to my congress-critters asking them to award Professor Liviu Librescu that said honor.

Contact info here, here, and here.
Here is the letter I sent to President Bush and my federal lawmakers:

You may already be aware of the story of visiting Virginia Tech Professor Liviu Librescu. If not let me share it with you briefly. This hero, a holocaust survivor, put the lives of his students above his own when he blocked the way of the deranged killer, allowing his students to escape. He paid for this heroism with his life.

Selfless sacrifice such as this should not go unnoticed nor unrecognized. I respectfully ask that you recommend or support professor Librescu for the Medal of Freedom and/or the Congressional Gold Medal.

In the wake of such tragedy and horror it is encouraging to know that true heroes still exist in this world.

I think I’ll leave it at that this morning.

Thank you for your coffee, seignor. I shall miss that when we leave Casablanca. ~ Ingrid Bergman (Casablanca)

Of course the story that pushed most everything else of the radar yesterday was the murder spree at Virginia Tech.

Sister Toldjah Virginia Tech massacre: Yesterday’s heros (UPDATE II: NAMES OF SOME OF THE VICTIMS RELEASED) has this from the Virginia Tech press conference this morning:

The killer is: Cho Hui Seung (corrected) – 23 y/o South Korean student, enrolled as undergrad – senior year, he was an English major. Living on campus. 2 handguns found on Lee. Confirmed that those guns were used in both shootings.

Captain’s Quarters (Ed Morrissey) Tragedy And Heroism

The shootings at Virginia Tech that killed 33 people, including the gunman, will generate many stories of horror over the next few days and weeks. Already we have heard about the cold and mechanical manner in which the perpetrator selected and shot his many victims. However, the terrible day also will produce stories of courage and heroism, and the first has been that of Professor Liviu Librescu. The Romanian-Israeli engineering professor and Holocaust survivor gave his life to save his students:

Wizbang (Jay Tea) Requiem for a monster

This deed was not committed by a weapon, a political movement, or some failing of society. It was not carried out by a video game, a rap song, or pornography. This was, ultimately, the fault of exactly one man — and we can’t punish him for it, as he has already chosen to enact the ultimate sanction upon himself.
