What possible reason can there be for the United States to host, materially support, and continue to be a member of the corrupt, socialist leaning, democracy and human rights ignoring United Nations? This latest is just one more reason to get out.

The top U.N. rights body on Thursday passed a resolution proposed by Islamic countries saying it is deeply concerned about the defamation of religions and urging governments to prohibit it.

[...]

The U.N. Human Rights Council, which is dominated by Arab and other Muslim countries, adopted the resolution on a 21-10 vote over the opposition of Europe and Canada.

[...]

The document, which was put forward by the Organization of the Islamic Conference, “expresses deep concern at attempts to identify Islam with terrorism, violence and human rights violations.”

Although the text refers frequently to protecting all religions, the only religion specified as being attacked is Islam, to which eight paragraphs refer.

This is not a rarity from the laughably named Human Rights Council.

I believe it was Glenn Beck who suggested a couple of thousand folks with shovels surround the UN complex and put it adrift. Sounds like a good idea to me.

I just found this at The Jawa Report:

Prompted by the following action alert from GDG contributor Kenneth Timmerman, I discovered that Iranian president Ahmadinejad still plans to visit ‘ground zero’, despite the NYPD’s refusal to allow it for “security reasons”.

In response to this outrage, many have begun organizing to repel or protest this incursion into one of America’s most hallowed memorials. Please read the following action alert, and participate if you are able:

Dear Friends of Freedom,

The Foundation for Democracy in Iran, in coordination with Citizens United and other groups, is calling on all Americans, regardless of their origin or political beliefs, to come to New York on Monday to defend Ground Zero from desecration by the terrorist president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

We will be chartering buses from the Washington, DC area. Please watch our website, www.iran.org, for more details and for rendezvous points.

Stay tuned!

Best regards,

Just Wow. Just heard this, linked on Drudge.

In a move that has stunned New York, the Bloomberg administration is in discussions to escort the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to ground zero during his visit to New York next week, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said today.

The Iranian mission to the U.N. made the request to the New York City Police Department and the Secret Service, who will jointly oversee security during the president’s two-day visit.

Un-be-lieveable.

UPDATE: DENIED!

Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly caused considerable confusion earlier today when he suggested that the request was still pending. In fact, police officials said later, the request — made at a meeting that included the Secret Service and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey — was denied for reasons of security and safety. They added that Mr. Ahmadinejad’s aides had asked that he be allowed into the pit, where construction is taking place.

You know, now that I think about it they should allow him into the pit.

They just shouldn’t let him back out.

(h/t for the update: Sister(Wench)Toldjah and Pirate’s Cove)

Probably not this morning. I woke up around 3am and took some cough medicine…

You can figure out the rest.

LATE AFTERNOON SUBSTITUTE

Captain’s Quarters (Ed Morrissey) A Rough Start For Mahmoud’s Festival Of Ignorance — “Pity poor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Here he goes to all the trouble of serving up some prime red meat to the Jew-haters of Islam, and they treat him like … well, like an ignorant and dangerous dictator. In the opening moments of the Holocaust Festival of Ignorance in Teheran, during which he called the Nazi genocide a “myth”, students made it clear that they weren’t buying what Mahmoud was shoveling:”

Iowa Voice (Brian) This Is Why We Don’t Take Global Warming Seriously — “See, the problem is that not enough people remember thirty years ago when we had some bad winters, and all the kook scientists were crying that we were entering another ice age. Now, because we happened to have had a few hotter summers than usual, it’s global warming and our skin is going to burn off. In another thirty years, they’ll be either back to the ‘ice age’ theory again, or they’ll have moved on to something else. Global milding, maybe?” [And for a good laugh make sure you read all the comments from the outraged. lol. Jim]

Blue Crab Boulevard (Gaius) Feel The Love — “If there was any real responsibility at the UN, Kofi Annan should have been turned out of office on his ear a long time ago. His continued tenure there for two terms is, I suspect, a direct result of his kissing up to some of the worst governments in the world. His relentless attempts to undermine anything America has tried to do in the decade of his control of the UN made him the darling of dictators everywhere.”

The latest fallout from the 2006 mid-terms:

Unable to win Senate confirmation, U.N. Ambassador John Bolton will step down when his temporary appointment expires within weeks, the White House said Monday.

[...]

President Bush, in a statement, said he was “deeply disappointed that a handful of United States senators prevented Ambassador Bolton from receiving the up or down vote he deserved in the Senate.”

“They chose to obstruct his confirmation, even though he enjoys majority support in the Senate, and even though their tactics will disrupt our diplomatic work at a sensitive and important time,” Bush said. “This stubborn obstructionism ill serves our country, and discourages men and women of talent from serving their nation.”

I agree with Gaius at Blue Crab Boulevard who said,

This is a genuine loss for the US. Bolton was one of the few people standing up against the worst excesses of that corrupt UN bureaucracy that has become almost completely useless in recent years.

That is so very true.

Then there is the usual garbage from the usual suspects:

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass, said Bolton’s departure could be a turning point for the administration.

“With the Middle East on the verge of chaos and the nuclear threats from Iran and North Korea increasing, we need a United Nations ambassador who has the full support of Congress and can help rally the international community to tackle the serious threats we face,” Kerry said. He said it was an opportunity for Bush to nominate an ambassador “who enjoys the support necessary to unite our country and the world and who can put results ahead of ideology.”

Which is, of course, a typical Kerry load of crapolla, as Chad Evans noticed as well.

Bolton had results. He nailed the face of the UN every time he spoke of it. It’s Kerry and his team who were putting ideology ahead of results, something he accuses Bolton of doing. Name one time he did so during his tenure in the UN, Mr. Kerry.

The President had a more accurate assessment of Ambassador Bolton’s too short tenure.

“During his tenure, he articulately advocated the positions and values of the United States and advanced the expansion of democracy and liberty.

“Ambassador Bolton led the successful negotiations that resulted in unanimous Security Council resolutions regarding North Korea’s military and nuclear activities. He built consensus among our allies on the need for Iran to suspend the enrichment and reprocessing of uranium,” Bush added. “His efforts to promote the cause of peace in Darfur resulted in a peacekeeping commitment by the United Nations. He made the case for United Nations reform because he cares about the institution, and wants it to become more credible and effective.”

Sister Toldjah’s reaction is also dead on:

He will be missed, not by the people who think we should play nice with evil, but by the people who believe evil should be called for what it is.

Other commentary of note:

Blogs for Bush (Matt Margolis)

Bolton served honorably, and Democrats were so unwilling to admit they were wrong about him that they blocked his nomination without just cause…again.. What did Republicans do? Did they force Democrats into a real filibuster? Nope. They let Bolton go without a fight. Well, until they are ready to fight, we should just leave the post vacant.

Democrats have killed bipartisanship in the new Congress before officially taking control as the majority.

Michelle Malkin

We are losing a staunch, devoted defender of America’s interests at the U.N.

Hugh Hewitt (Dean Barnett)

Bolton was a voice of moral clarity at a time and place where there haven’t been many. It is a sad day when such a voice has been silenced.

SoCalPundit (Kevin Korenthal)

John Bolton was an effective advocate for reform in the U.N. and he stood up for the U.S. in a time when many want America’s power ceded to a corrupt and ineffective United Nations Security Council.

Captain’s Quarters (Ed Morrissey) Standing On Chapter VII — “The usual suspects of appeasement took center stage again last night at the UN after the US circulated a draft resolution imposing sanctions on North Korea. Russia and China objected to the use of Chapter VII language in the proposed sanctions, which could later support military action against Kim Jong-Il, but John Bolton said he would not back away from the reference this time:”

Dr. Sanity (Pat Santy) RECENT HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MORAL AND INTELLECTUAL BANKRUPTCY OF TODAY’S LEFT — “What we have witnessed over the 30- 45 years since the Left ascended to dominate political thought in the mid 20th century, is its rapid and unprecedented decline into wholesale intellectual and moral bankruptcy. The noble values and ideals they once claimed they stood for have been completely abandoned; and almost as if a surreal cosmic joke was being played on them, they have—without even noticing!– embraced the exact opposite.”

Blue Crab Boulevard Wild About Harry — “Wow, the media is picking up the story about Harry Reid’s lucrative land deal and running with it. The Philadelphia Inquirer has an editorial, the WaPo has one, too and it appears even more major newspapers a writing about it. Harry is going to have some ‘splainin’ to do.”

Basil’s Blog William Teach (Pirate’s Cove) [Basil's blogger interviews are always a great weekend read. Mad Pirate William Teach at Pirate's Cove is a favorite which I read daily and link to too infrequently. Fans of the Cove will enjoy this post and others should become fans. Jim]

Pirate’s Cove (William Teach) Some Good News From Afghanistan Makes The News — “It is surprising, because the media doesn’t want to extend any sort of good news for anything that the Bush administration has done or is doing. Maybe it is because NATO has taken over. Who knows?

The story itself is an interesting mix of “everything is going bad” and “hey, look, Freedom!” ”

Captain’s Quarters (Ed Morrissey) US Deal On Iranian Sanctions? — “The US announced yesterday that a deal had been reached with the other permanent members of the UN Security Council to apply sanctions against Iran for their failure to comply with UNSC resolutions demanding a halt to their enrichment program. None of the nations announced any specific steps, but the New York Times reports that they have all agreed in principle to a reversible, phased application that will isolate Iran economically and diplomatically:”

Blue Crab Boulevard I’m Not Sure Why — “Tom Kean, Jr. felt he had to do this. He has called for Speaker Dennis Hastert’s resignation. In the first place, Kean is in a Senate race and has been mixing it up very well with Robert Menendez. In the second place, Kean has been doing that by focusing on his race. Now he’s made what I consider to be a mistake.”

Enjoy your Saturday.

I quoted Harry Reid, Edward M. Kennedy, Barbara Mikulski, and Barack Obama. John Kerry’s words were also examined:

And finally, John (why let the truth get in the way) Kerry (who served in Viet Nam, by the way) – “The president has the right to make this recess appointment, but it’s the wrong decision. It only diminishes John Bolton’s validity and leverage to secure America’s goals at the U.N. John Bolton has been rejected twice by the Senate to serve as our Ambassador to the United Nations. This is not the way to fill our most important diplomatic jobs.”
Funny thing is, he’s got a real BS sandwich here. Totally wrong analysis sandwiched between two true statements. Do I think that last statement is true? I sure do. An up or down vote would have been the better way, but if you can’t beat ‘em, obstruct ‘em is the new way of the left.

As you probably know, Ambassador Bolton’s appointment will expire in just a few months. In spite of the outstanding job he has done so far, the possibility that those on the left will make another attempt to obstuct his appointment remains a very real prospect.

Senator Bill Frist’s VOLPAC has created Blogging For Bolton.

This month Senate Republicans will do everything they can to break Democrat obstruction and give John Bolton the fair up-or-down vote that he was denied last year. But we need your help to turn up the heat on the Democrats by flooding their offices with your calls in support of Ambassador Bolton and the President’s agenda for reforming the waste and incompetence of the United Nations.

Go to the site, make your phone calls, and help get John Bolton confirmed and back doing the job he is doing so well.
