I’m taking a look back at 2007 this week. It’s interesting to see just what I posted about, and what was going on through the year.

March — Giving Something New A Try

Or maybe it’s not that new. Few, if any, of you know that my first post-college career was in broadcasting. Not talk radio to be sure, but I was a broadcast major and worked at several stations in the first few years after college. Inspired by Captain Ed, I’m going to give Blog Talk Radio a shot.

So, back on March 17th First Cup Radio was born. It has now become bRight @ Night, but it’s still a lot of fun. In fact there is a show tomorrow night. Tune in at 10:30pm Eastern to talk about whatever the right side of the blogosphere is writing about.

Well, hopefully the Iranians won’t renege on their promise, anyway. Mad Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced he was “pardoning” the captured British sailors and marines and would allow them to leave Iran. Damned nice of him to grant them a pardon for Iran’s piracy, isn’t it. But hopefully, they are going home soon.

Some folks are a bit upset with the President because of remarks he made to British PM Tony Blair.

Bush expressed his frustration with the United Nations and his disgust with the militant Islamic group and its backers in Syria as he talked to British Prime Minister Tony Blair during the closing lunch at the Group of Eight summit.

“See the irony is that what they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this s— and it’s over,” Bush told Blair as he chewed on a buttered roll.

I’ll get to the substance of his remarks in a moment.

Of course what many are upset about is the “S” word. In reading this I’m reminded of Rev. Grady Nutt, a Baptist preacher who was a regular on Hee-Haw, and even had his own television show — briefly. At one time I owned one of his comedy albums (and yes, it was an album. Vinyl. Remember those?). Reading the story today brought a line from that album to mind. This may not be an exact quote, but I’m sure it’s pretty close:

“Preachers are cursed at times because they can’t curse at times.” (I guess you could say the same about Presidents).

He went on to say that when you hit your thumb with a hammer that “hallelujah” isn’t the first word that comes to mind.

Anyhow, instead of getting one’s panties in a wad over the words he used, let’s look at the substance of his private remark. That part is dead on. If Syria and Hezbollah stop, it is all over.

Chad Evans (In The Bullpen) put it this way:

The “solution” to this temporary war is just that. Syria and Iran hold the cards as far as what Hezbollah does or doesn’t do. Syria could easily reign in Hezbollah if they wanted to.

While Bob at Confederate Yankee was even more to the point:

The President of the United States said shit because Hezbollah terrorists—supported and supplied by Syria and Iran—are firing rocket after rocket at Israeli cities in order to kill Israeli civilians.

Exactly.

In The Bullpen (Chad Evans) BREAKING: Syria Will Aid Lebanese — “But there’s something very odd happening all accross the Middle East; people are supporting Israel. Not everyone is and people still somehow think the United States controls Israel, but there is a large portion that are at least blaming Hezbollah for starting this entire mess. Could you have imagined that even one week ago? I couldn’t. They may not actively support the Israeli regime, but many are letting their opinions known that they would like to see Israel obliterate Hezbollah.”

Outside The Beltway (Greg Tinti) “This Is Our War, Too.” — “That’s Bill Kristol’s take on what’s going on in Middle East right now. Why? Because unlike past conflicts, this isn’t an Arab-Israeli war but rather an Islamist-Israeli war and, therefore, one which the United States has an obligation to fight.”

Captain’s Quarters (Ed Morrissey) Syrian Power Structure Bypassing Assad? — “Syria made its official entry into the war breaking out between Israel and Hezbollah, pledging to come to the aid of Hezbollah and Lebanon if necessary to ensure Israel’s defeat. However, the statement did not come from Bashar Assad, the ostensible leader of Syria, but from a meeting of the Ba’athist party’s power brokers:”
