Here’s a quick poll for your end of the year enjoyment. What agreement will be reached first – one to avert the fiscal cliff, or one that will salvage the NHL season. The poll is over in the sidebar.
Staying away from politics for the day. I’m enjoying being a sports fan today, and it’s a great time of year to be a sports fan. NASCAR is in the chase part of their season with Talladega the next stop tomorrow. College and NFL football are both well under way, and the NHL started today with the Lightning losing to the Rangers in Prague.
Best of all my Phillies are in the playoffs and are up 2 games to none over the Brewers. Game three is on right now. The Phils are down 3-0 in the 6th but they have a runner on third with only one out. As I write this Howard scores Werth from third, 3-1 and two out.
Politics will be back soon enough, but for now I’ll take the Obama approach — If you need me, call me.
The first period has just ended and the Flyers are trailing 2-0.
Well, my hockey season is over. The Penguins win the series 4-1.
You knew I would have this post up sooner or later. It’s about half way through the 1st period, and even as I’m typing this Lupul scores!
Briere scores on a power play. Flyers up 2-0
3-0 before the 1st period comes to an end.
Goose eggs in the second stanza. Still 3-0
The Penguins get on the board just under 5 minutes into the 3rd. 3-1 Flyers.
Pittsburgh score one, the Flyers put up an empty netter. 4-2 with 22.8 seconds left. Put away those brooms, the Flyers live to fight another day. Nest game, Sunday afternoon at 3pm.
They’ve dropped the gloves a couple of times here in the last half minute.
As I was writing the last post the Flyers fell to a 2-1 deficit in the first period of game 3. Period two has just started.
No scoring in the second. The Penguins score mid way through the third and add and empty net goal in the final seconds. 4-1 Pittsburgh is the final. They take the lead 3 games to zip.
I was busy getting supper fixed so I missed most of this first period. Pittsburgh is up 1-0 and they are reviewing a possible Penguin goal now. The call on the ice was no goal. Not enough conclusive evidence to overturn. Still 1-0 with 3:03 left in the first.
END OF 1st
2nd Period 5:46 Carter scores (power play) for the Flyers. 1-1
2nd period 13:43 Hossa scores for the Penguins at 9 seconds into a power play. 1-2 Pittsburgh.
2nd Period 19:36 RICHARDS! Unassisted and short handed. Tied at 2.
END OF 2nd
Sometime around the start of the third is where I fell asleep. Final 4-2 Pittsburgh to take a 2-0 lead in the series.
7:04 in the second period, The Flyers are the first on the board. Nice goal by
Upshaw Upshall with an assist from Lupul. Go Flyers!!
Richards adds a shorthanded goal at 15:12
And one more from R.J. Umberger at 18:19. Biron has been a wall.
Montreal scored twice during a 5 minute major to Hatcher (with a game misconduct). 3-2 now.
WHEW! Flyers hold on to take a 2-1 lead in the series.
The NFL Draft, NASCAR Nationwide Aaron’s 312 race from Talladega, and the Redwings/Avalanche quarter finals game two. The remote control is going to be smoking! I bet there’s a baseball game on somewhere, too.
I’ve been a Flyers fan and a hockey fan for over thirty years. In all those years I can’t remember ever seeing what I just observed in tonight’s Flyers/Capitols playoff game 3. The Flyers scored first late in the 1st period and Washington answered just a few seconds later. That’s not the unusual part. After the Capitols tied the score Philadelphia answered with another two very quick goals. Four goals in a span of 2:33 to put the Flyers up 3-1 at the first intermission. Wow.
UPDATE: The teams traded goals in the second making the score 4-2 going into the second intermission. In the third the Caps scored a goal that was reviewed to be sure it didn’t go in off of a high stick. At 4-3 the unusual night of offense wasn’t over. The Flyers scored their 5th goal on a penalty shot then added an empty netter to finish of the win 6-3.
The Flyers lead the series two games to one. Game four will be on VS. Thursday night.
