I Just Won

. . . a bet with myself.

In my feed reader I can see the headline Group decries textbooks on Islam as inflammatory followed by this opening paragraph:

A series of children’s textbooks on Islam contains misleading and inflammatory rhetoric about the religion, inaccurately portraying its followers as inherently violent and deserving of suspicion, according to a Muslim civil liberties group.

Anyone want to make a bet with yourself about who this “group” might be? The answer is below the fold.

Are There Conservative Bloggers in Louisville?

Louisville at NightI just want to know. There’s been some discussion about moving to Louisville, KY. and I would love to hear from those in the know. You know, to expand my knowledge beyond what I can learn on the intertubes.

I really need to know more than it’s home to the Kentucky Derby, Louisville Slugger Bat Co., and the U of L Cardinals.

The good news is my job. The company I work for has an office there, and what I do can be done just as easily there as here. So, what do you know that could help as I think about this move? Are there conservative bloggers there? Are there conservatives there? Inquiring minds want to know.

This Sounds Familiar

This is going to be a bit long, so I’ll post part of it below the fold. It’s a passage from Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged. The scene occurs just over half way through the book. It’s a conversation between Dagny Taggart and a bum who snuck on her train. He’s describing what happened at the place he was working, but see if you don’t agree that it sounds very familiar.

“Well there was something that happened at that plant where I worked for twenty years. It was when the old man died and his heirs took over. There were three of them, two sons and a daughter, and they brought a new plan to run the factory. They let us vote on it too, and everybody — almost everybody — voted for it. We didn’t know. We thought it was good. No, that’s not true, either. We thought that we were supposed to think it was good. The plan was that everybody in the factory would work according to his ability but would be paid according to his need. We — what’s the matter ma’am? Why do you look like that?”

“What was the name of the factory?” she asked, her voice barely audible.

“The Twentieth Century Motor Compay, ma’am, of Starnesville, Wisconsin.”

“Go on.”

“We voted for that plan at a big meeting, with all of us present, six thousand of us, everybody that worked in the factory. The Starnes heirs made long speeches about it, and it wasn’t to clear, but nobody asked any questions. None of us knew just how the plan would work, but everyone of us thought that the next fellow knew it. And if anybody had doubts, he felt guilty and kept his mouth shut — because they made it sound like anyone who’d oppose the plan was a child-killer at heart and less than a human being. They told us that this plan would achieve a noble ideal. Well, how were we to know otherwise? Hadn’t we heard it all of our lives — from our parents and our schoolteachers and our ministers, and in every newspaper we ever read and every movie and every public speech? Hadn’t we always been told that this was righteous and just? Well, maybe there’s some excuse for what we did at that meeting. Still, we voted for the plan — and what we got, we had coming to us. You know, ma’am, we are marked men, in a way, those of us who lived through the four years of that plan in the Twentieth Century factory. What is it that hell is supposed to be? Evil — plain, naked, smirking evil, isn’t it? Well, that’s what we saw and helped to make — and I think we’re damned, everyone of us, and maybe we’ll never be forgiven. . .

Stu Bkkofski, a writer for Philly.com, responded to readers who objected to his opinion on Michael Vick. I’m not going into that here, but I am stealing one great line from the beginning of his article where he details some of the names he has been called over his stance:

And the all-purpose tool of the all-around fool: Racist.

That’s going to come into play often.

Pulling out the crystal ball, I predict a road trip for Wyatt in the very near future.

Police say a truck carrying 40,000 pounds of beer overturned in Vermont and closed a highway for several hours.

[...]

Travis Greeno, assistant chief of the Swanton Fire Department, says the truck had to be offloaded before it was pulled out of the ditch. He said it was “going to be a long day.”

100 Post Marathon #18

Only a pet lover will understand this: Man saves dog by sucking snake venom from his nose

A man said he saved his dog’s life after sucking venom from a rattlesnake bite out of the animal’s nose. Bobby Jenkins said he began feeling ill after getting his dog, Tank, to a veterinarian. He went to the hospital and received a dose of antivenin.

I bet Bobby’s glad the snake bit Tank on the nose. I’m just sayin’

If you can…

Okay, campers.

First D.J.: Okay, campers, rise and shine, and don’t forget your booties ’cause it’s cooooold out there today.
Second D.J.: It’s coooold out there every day. What is this, Miami Beach?
First D.J.: Not hardly. And you know, you can expect hazardous travel later today with that, you know, that, uh, that blizzard thing.
Second D.J.: [mockingly] That blizzard – thing. That blizzard – thing. Oh, well, here’s the report! The National Weather Service is calling for a “big blizzard thing!”
First D.J.: Yessss, they are. But you know, there’s another reason why today is especially exciting.
Second D.J.: Especially cold!
First D.J.: Especially cold, okay, but the big question on everybody’s lips…
Second D.J.: – On their chapped lips…
First D.J.: – On their chapped lips, right: Do ya think Phil is gonna come out and see his shadow?
Second D.J.: Punxsutawney Phil!
First D.J.: Thats right, woodchuck-chuckers – it’s
[in unison]
First D.J.: GROUNDHOG DAY!
Second D.J.: GROUNDHOG DAY!

Let me modify another quote from the movie.

I was in the Virgin Islands once. I met a girl. We ate lobster and drank pina coladas. At sunset we made love like sea otters. *That* was a pretty good day. Why couldn’t I get that day over and over and over…

We had a great president once. Ronald Reagan. We were safe and prosperous. The country was in good hands, and it showed. *That* was a pretty good time. Why couldn’t we get that presidency over and over and over instead of Jimmy Carter II…

A Couple Of Questions

Just a couple of random questions/musings this Christmas Eve morning.

Is the Featured Post really featured? — I was thinking that perhaps the featured post sometimes gets lost from conscious view by readers who automatically scroll down thinking there’s nothing new there. Your thoughts?

What prompts readers to comment? — I have just over 7000 comments on just under 3500 posts, or an average of about 2 comments per post. What factors draw comments? Is it having regular readers? Controversial content? The overall tone of the blog? Asking questions in the post? How much I comment on other blogs?

How do you read this and other blogs? — Are you more likely to read posts in a feed reader, or “in person”?

What are your plans for today? — I’m heading in to work early so I can get home earlier. I know that some businesses close early today. What’s going on in your world on Christmas Eve?

What are your more unusual Christmas traditions? — Everyone shares many of the traditions of Christmas from trees and decorations to reading the Christmas story and opening presents. What I want to know is what things do you do that have become traditions in your house that are not quite as traditional. One thing that I’ve carried with me from my long-ago younger days is having Polish Kielbasa for Christmas breakfast. We would have it sliced into half-dollar sized pieces and fried in the skillet. Later at my grandmothers we would have some more cut longer and served on a hot dog bun or slice of bread. Mmmmm Kielbasa! How about you?

Until later, have a great Christmas Eve day.

What I’ve Learned

Posted on : 26-11-2008 | By : Jim Lynch | In : Just Sayin'

3

Today is my birthday. This isn’t an unusual event, I’ve had them before. In fact, I’ve had a lot of them already. This is number fifty-three.

I hope that in that time I’ve learned a few things. Not really earth shattering things, but I consider them to be pretty important. As an elder in the tribe I have the prerogative to share them with you, so sit down, shut up, and listen. Oh, and respect your elders.

They’re in no particular order, and this list is not all-inclusive. In other words, just some random thoughts and I’ll probably forget a bunch of stuff.

I’m not as good as I think I am. By good I mean the idealized view we all have of ourselves. I’ve known this for a while now, but it did take some time to sink in. A psychologist could probably put this better, but I believe that we are all several different people; the person we think we should be, the person we think we are, and the person we really are. The best we can hope for is to narrow the gaps.

I’m not as bad as I think I am. There are things in life that make you feel like a total failure. My life is full of them. Not to mitigate the importance of some of those things, it still took some time to realize that my failures are not as complete as thought and that perfection is far from possible. Related to this is understanding that even the worst failures are not the end of the world and that most things can still be fixed, or at least improved.

There’s nothing wrong with my monitor. Reading glasses are here for the duration.

Thinking something is important doesn’t make it so. This applies to politics, work, hobbies, and all the rest of life. It also applies to what others think. Just because you think something is all important don’t expect me to see it the same way. Harder yet as been the ability to realize that you (the big, broad, whoever it happens to be at the moment you) don’t give things the same importance that I do. This post is exhibit “A”. That’s OK.

Sometimes life sucks. Most people learn this pretty early on. Just learning it isn’t the important part, it’s knowing that life can throw the worst at you and that you are still around to go at it again. How cool is that?

Related to the above: Sometimes life sucks, but it’s only sometimes. Most of the time life is great. Not “I have everything I could possibly want” great, but “I have every possibility I could want” great. There’s a difference.

I’m never going to be in the shape I was in in my twenties again.

I need to be in better shape in my fifties or I’m never going to see my sixties.

The best advice I’ve ever heard: There are only two things in life that you can control; your attitude and your actions. If you don’t realize how profound that is, think about it some more.

I’ve mentioned this before (and I’m too lazy to search for a link), my philosophy of life: Always be content. Never be satisfied. Let me explain. There is a big difference between contentment and satisfaction. Many people get it backwards. When I say always be content I mean don’t whine about where you are in life. Believe me, no one else cares. That doesn’t mean you (in other words, me) should be satisfied with where you are. Be better, work harder, don’t give up. When I say that many people get it backwards I mean that too many times I see people who are satisfied with where they are in life, but they are hardly content.

Principles are more important than politics.

Like what you like ’cause you like it. Everyone else can go pound sand.

Learn something new today. Plan on learning something new tomorrow, it will give you something to look forward to.

Reading is one of the greatest gifts we’ve ever been given. See above.

Screwing up is OK. At least you’re doing something.

Cut people some slack. Not everyone is as perfect as I am. [/sarc]

That’s it. I know there’s more, but I need to get ready for work.
