All through the year I get a fair amount of traffic to my Father’s Day 2007 post. Mostly, I’m sure, it’s people looking at a few pictures I found of Connie Mack Stadium. That’s OK. I hope folks who surf in to that post take something away from my thoughts there as well.
It has been almost forty years since my dad passed away. One of the hardest things for me to wrap my mind around over the years has been the thought that I am now about sixteen years older than dad was when he died. I still miss him very much.
More than anything I miss the counsel I imagine I would have received when I became a father. I could have used it.
Every year I start to write one Father’s Day post and end up with something much different. This year, too.
Let me leave you with this: Fathers, be there. Just be there. Everything starts with you being there for your kids. You’re not going to get it all right, and you’re going to have regrets, but if you’re not there, even to screw up, you are going to even bigger, deeper regrets.
To all the dads out there, have a great day! To all the kids out there, he means well. To one special girl, I love you with all my heart. I’m proud of you and can not even begin to tell you all that’s in my heart.
Happy Fathers Day.
