A small plane leaving LaGuardia airport for North Carolina has crashed in New York’s Hudson River.

A U.S. Airways plane came down in the Hudson River off New York City on Thursday, and remained afloat in the frigid waters.

Local media said the plane was an Airbus with 146 passengers and five crew which had just taken off from La Guardia Airport and was trying to return after apparently striking a flock of birds.

Rescue teams are on the scene.
