I started the Blogiversary Database almost three years ago with the idea of celebrating (and bringing some traffic to) blogs on the day they were started. As I write this there are 417 blogs that have entered their information into the database. The question about continuing has several reasons behind it.
- Over two thirds of the blogs in the database have not added the display code to their site.
- Blogs come and go. I know that several of the blogs either no longer exist, or haven’t posted in quite some time. I removed three of the first ten blogs to join just this weekend.
- With few exceptions, the blogs that have joined over the past few months have been either porn, spam, or not even blogs.
- In addition to just “going out of business”, blogs also tend to move around. Unless I know about the move, and make the change manually, any link points to an old address.
- I have no idea if anyone really uses the information.
If I do end the program I will replace the display code with a message to remove it instead of just shutting it off. I would like to make a decision before the first of the year. Please let me know your thoughts in the comments to this post. (While your at it, try out the nested comments feature added this weekend thanks to WordPress 2.7 RC1)
UPDATE: One option I didn’t mention was someone else (preferably someone who is a better coder) taking over the program. If you’re interested, let me know.

I for one like the Blogiversary Widget, I’ve visited some blogs I never would have because of it.

I have visited some new sites as well. That was really part of the original intent when I started the BDB. If I keep doing it I am going to have to work on some serious upgrades, especially to keep out the spam.

Hey Jim,
I am one of the one’s with a valid site and have the HTML on my side bar. Although I rarely click any of the links, I do look at the names of the Blogs. I still have both your sites on my blog roll and follow them. I will support what even choice you make.

Thanks for your support. At the moment I’m leaning toward keeping it. Of course keeping it will mean I need to do some upgrading, but that’s OK.

That’s a real shame. I’ve had the blogoversary announcements on my blog for quite some time. I am disappointed that I will have to remove it from my sidebar.

Don’t remove it yet. I still haven’t decided one way or another.

Sean, I am leaning heavily toward keeping it. In fact I’ve done quite a bit of work on it over the last few days. Today’s task was cleaning out all of the blogs that no longer exist.
BTW, your comment was #7000 here.
