It Shouldn’t Be This Hard

Hillary Clinton is extremely polarizing with amazingly high negatives for a presidential candidate. She carries more baggage than a sky cap with a caffeine buzz. Every time she gives another example of her “experience” her nose grows a little. Even some of her husband’s supporters are less than enthusiastic about returning the Clintons to the White House. In fact it doesn’t always seem like the former president wants to return to Pennsylvania Avenue as “First Laddie”.

Then there is Barack Obama, the chimera candidate. He is a blank slate that can “appear to” be all things to all people. His resume consists of some well received speeches, very questionable associations, empty rhetoric, and little/nothing else.

On policy they are fraternal twins; they’re not identical, but you still have to look really close to tell them apart. With every position they’ve announced it’s not a question of policy difference but rather how much of your money they’re willing to throw at it. National security and judicial appointments are two other areas where they are more alike than different; and not in a good way.

Either one of these candidates would be a disaster for the country. A disaster with long lasting impact.

With such an impressive list of negatives, why will this race be so hard? Conservatives should be able to beat either candidate easier than rock beats scissors.

The problem, of course, is that our conservative candidate — isn’t. Not really.

The right has attempted to rally round John McCain. The support covers the spectrum from all out support to serious nose-holding reluctance. He just doesn’t make it easy. The candidate who plays up his ability to reach across the aisle seems to be adverse, at times, to champion issues important to large portions of his “side”.

The frustrating part, to me at least, is that just about the time I begin to move from grudging support to indifferent support (I’ve yet to reach “enthusiastic”) John McCain does something to make me grab my nose once again.

Getting beyond the historical items like BCRAp, “It’s not amnesty” Amnesty, and the gang of 14 only brings us to more recent events; imploring the NCRNC not to run the Rev. Wright ad being just the latest.

It shouldn’t be this hard.
