The Extra Day

I understand the need for leap year. It’s what keeps the calendar in line with the seasons. But why do we have to have presidential election years coincide with leap years? In a campaign season that has already been chugging along for over a year do we really need an extra day of speeches, appearances, fund raising and rhetoric?

But we don’t! Leap years are divisible by four, but years divisible by one hundred are not leap years unless also evenly divisible by four hundred; thus 1800, 1900 and 2100 are not leap years, but 2000 is. Thus, if you’ll just wait another 92 years, you’ll see a presidential campaign in a non-leap year.
