Breaking: Fire On White House Grounds

Just saw this story come across the reader:

Thick black smoke billowed from windows of the Executive Office Building on the White House compound on Wednesday.

A fire appeared to be centered on the second floor of the building, which houses staff of the White House, National Security Council and other presidential agencies.

Looking for more now.

UPDATE: From the radio news - The fire is contained and the building has been evacuated.

UPDATE II: WASHINGTON (Reuters)

A fire broke out near Vice President Dick Cheney’s ceremonial office in a building overlooking the White House on Wednesday, forcing hundreds of government staffers to evacuate.

Cheney was in the White House with President George W. Bush receiving their morning intelligence briefings when the blaze began and people were evacuated from the executive office building safely, White House officials said.

The fire appeared to have been contained to only a few offices. Smoke was wafting from one window of Cheney’s office. He usually works inside the White House itself.

Fire Department spokesman Alan Etter said firefighters saw smoke coming out of telephone or electrical equipment and there was no indication of terrorism.

  1. It’s a pretty sad reflection on the state of progressives that the second thing I do, after hoping everyone is alright, is to go see what the lunatics are up to, when a story like this hits the air. They rarely fail to amuse.
