Many thanks to Steveegg (No Runny Eggs) for discovering an answer to the problem that was driving me nuts.

I forgot to observe the first rule when working with WordPress – Always check the plugins!

I’m not done with the adjustments here, but now I can move forward without being bothered by a broken layout.
