Things are not going well today on the War on Terrorism — if you’re a terrorist.
In the Philippines:Top al-Qaida-linked militant killed
Jainal Antel Sali Jr., popularly known as Abu Sulaiman — a top leader of the Abu Sayyaf rebel group — was fatally shot in a fierce gunbattle Tuesday in a clash with army special forces, military chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon said.
Sulaiman is the highest-ranking Abu Sayyaf commander killed by U.S.-backed troops. Washington had offered up to $5 million for his capture.
In Afghanistan: Taliban commander seized in Afghanistan
The commander was the leader of the insurgents in Panjwayi district of neighboring Kandahar province, where last summer NATO troops waged their biggest ground offensive in the Western alliance’s history, said NATO spokesman Squadron Leader Dave Marsh.
“This seizure of a Taliban commander, once again shows that there is nowhere to hide for insurgent leaders,” Marsh said.
Or in Baghdad: Has Baghdad Stopped Burning?
Al Qaeda terrorists are fleeing Baghdad in advance of President Bush’s 21,500-man troop surge, a senior military intelligence officer told Pajamas Media today. Under orders from the al Qaeda commander in Iraq, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, fighters are streaming toward the Diyala region of Iraq.
This confirms reports posted on Iraq the Model, which cited al-Sabah, a well-known mouthpiece for al Qaeda in Iraq.
Granted, none of this events are the endgame in the war on terrorism. Taking out one leader has historically left only a very small gap. That being said, even slow, consistent erosion will eventually give you the Grand Canyon.
