Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis) is arguing against the King amendment to the Voting Rights Act as it is being debated in the House right now. The amendment would remove the Federal mandate requiring certain voting districts to provide ballots in other than English. It wouldn’t preclude them from doing so, just remove the requirement to do so.
In his argument Rep. Sensenbrenner made the point that this was primarily in place for things such as ballot initiatives. But this is the part that I just don’t understand; He emphasised that some of these initiatives couldn’t be understood in English, therefore they need to be available in the voters language. Isn’t the real problem then legislators and others not writing initiatives in a way that they can be understood? Help me understand.
