Terror Suspects Arrested

The AP is reporting from Toronto:

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said they arrested 12 male adults and five youth and foiled plans for terrorist attacks against targets in southern Ontario.

Officials showed evidence of bomb making materials, a computer hard drive, camouflage uniforms and what appears to be a door with bullet holes in it at a news conference Saturday morning.

“This group took steps to acquire three tons of ammonium nitrate and other components necessary to create explosive devices,” said assistant Royal Canadian Mounted Police commissioner Mike McDonell said.

That is, according to McDonell, three times the amount used to blow up the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City.

Captain Ed quotes from the National Post and says that, “the homegrown jihadists appear to be the next wave of terrorists.” He also raises this point:

Europe faces a similar situation, and now the question will be whether the US has something brewing in its mosques as well. We have already uncovered the Lodi mosque and the father-son jihadi team there. Canada has similar cultural flexibility as the US; to think that this could metastasize there but not here would be foolish indeed.

In this morning’s First Cup I pointed out a post by Debbie at Right Truth. In it she was discussing the toxin Ricin and pipe bombs that were found in Nashville. She also links to an article titled Homegrown Terror by Michael Reynolds which says in part, “A bomb is a bomb. A chemical weapon is a chemical weapon. It won’t matter to the victims whether their attacker’s name is Ahmed or Bill.”

How true.

Update: Fox News adds this:

FBI Special Agent Richard Kilko in Washington, D.C., said there may have been a connection between the Canadian men and a Georgia Tech student and another American who had traveled to Canada to meet with Islamic extremists to discuss suitable locations for a terrorist strike.

Syed Haris Ahmed and Ehsanul Islam Sadequee, both U.S. citizens who grew up in the Atlanta area, were arrested in March.

“The FBI is aware of the ongoing law enforcement activity in Canada,” Kilko said. “There is preliminary indication that some of the Canadian subjects may have had limited contact with the two people recently arrested from Georgia.”
