First Cup
No coffee can be good in the mouth that does not first send a sweet offering of odour to the nostrils. ~ Henry Ward Beecher

My Vast Right Wing Conspiracy (Martin) Uh-oh. Senate agrees immigration deal — “When Bill Frist and Harry Reid agree on something, there’s a very good chance that you won’t. But no matter, they are our betters, as Cynthia ‘Slugger’ McKinney will attest.”

Red State RedState on Immigration — “Before even getting into our points, let’s start with the basic fact that something must be done. The cost of doing nothing is greater than even the cost of legitimate enforcement of current laws.”

Power Line (John) Speak Up On Immigration — “The Senate compromise that apparently was agreed to today is only one step in the legislative process. The House and Senate bills will have to be finalized and reconciled in conference, and the resulting bill voted on in both chambers. So the battle is far from over. Now is the time when we need to make ourselves heard.” [Power Line News is running a poll on this issue. Go Vote.]

Big Lizards (Dafydd) Breaking: Senate Compromises On Immigration Reform –”n a shocking example of comity, the Senate — including most Democrats — appears to have coalesced around the compromise bill of Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist; the Democrats appear to have dropped their objections both to the “no felony convictions” rule for citizenship, and also to the lack of guaranteed re-entry for those illegals who have been here less than two years: they’re still obliged to return to their countries of origin and apply for readmission, but under this bill, they can be denied for any of a number of reasons.”

Captain’s Quarters (Ed Morrissey) Immigration Reform: Less Is … Well, Less — “In the hours after the announcement of a compromise on immigration reform, it seems that details have been might scarce — never a good sign when legislators announce an agreement. If the deal actually satisfied anyone, the politicians would have had the wonks out in force in an attempt to impress the media and calm the passionate. The lack of detail signals that the compromise may be little more than an easy way out of a contentious battle.”
