Remembering Carroll Campbell
By Jim Lynch on Dec 7, 2005 in General
My first involvement in party politics involved working on the campaigns of Floyd Spence and Carroll Campbell in South Carolina. I had the opportunity to meet both men and admired them both very much. I have just learned that Carroll Campbell died earlier today at age 65.
Gov. Campbell served in the state senate, the US house, and as SC Governor for two terms. He deserves a large portion of the credit for moving the state from it’s long time single party status to a strong two party state. In recent years he suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.
Jeff Quinton: Backcountry Conservative (h/t: OTB) has the details and reports from around South Carolina.
What I remember most about him is how genuinely nice he was. He will be missed. My prayers are with his family and many friends.
UPDATE: James Trabert: The Bushido Way has a very good post on Gov. Campbell

Jim,
I wish you would have expanded more on your post about Gov. Campbell. Many of your readers will have trouble recalling a time when the Republican Party did not have major control of the Palmetto State’s political seats, but Campbell came of age during a time when the (Southern) Democrats ruled the state. To put things into perspective, when Campbell was elected governor he became the second (Post-Reconstruction) Republican to win a gubernatorial election in the state of South Carolina. He cared deeply and worked diligently for our beloved Palmetto State. He will be missed by both sides of the aisle in our state.

James, you did a much better job than I would have. I’m adding a link to your post on the front of this post.
