Narnia
By Jim Lynch on Dec 11, 2005 in Christianity, General
I fell in love with the land of Narnia, and other writings of C.S. Lewis, in college. However, my first exposure to this amazing author was back in high school when I first read The Screwtape Letters.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with that book, it is the story of an assistant demon and problems he encounters doing his “job.”
What always impressed me about Lewis’s fiction was how compelling his stories were as stories.
For science fiction fans, the trilogy that begins with Out of the Silent Planet is also worth reading. It will also make you take a second look at the story of creation and the fall of man.
Some of his other works include Mere Christianity, Surprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life, and The Great Divorce
Of course it his the Chronicles of Narnia
that are his most well known work, and of course the newly release film is undoubtedly reviving book sales as well. I am anxious to see this film, hoping it will accurately reflect the book.

Saw it with my 6 yo daughter today. Was pretty intense, but we’d told her the story and felt she could handle it. Extraordinarily well done, in a word. I don’t know the book as well as my wife does, but it seemes pretty close, and boy were the real important Aslan scenes done with great care and grace. Effects were pretty good, but they put EVERYTHING into Aslan, I tells ya. Unbelievable how believable he was! Nice also that the battle scenes weren’t bloody (don’t get me wrong, they were violent — close, but not LOTR-level). A little much for a 6 yo, but then we have neighbors who took their 6 yo to Harry Potter Goblet of Fire… no way we’d let her see that for a few years yet!

Oh PS: Screwtape was the first CS Lewis I’d ever read, so reading the Narnia books was quite a gear change. I’m coming to them late in life, have only just finished The Silver Chair. My wife’s read them each about 10 times…
