If you are reading this blog (or any political blog for that matter) it isn’t news to find out that President Bush used his Constitutional powers to appoint John Bolton as Ambassador to the UN. Good. Here’s what I wrote on June 21st regarding this possibility.
The spin on this from the left, and some of the weak-kneed right is that this would make Bolton ineffective. Well he could sure do a lot more as ambasador then he can sitting around waiting for obstructionists (yes, I know I’ve used that word repeatedly this morning. I meant to. It fits.) to allow a vote. One argument is that a recess apointment would appear to the internationl community as lacking bipartisan support. He doesn’t have bipartisan support. He doesn’t need bipartisan support. What he has is the support of the American President who nominated him and the majority in the US Senate who have so far been denied the opportunity to finalize that support.
Darn, I’m good. As expected the moonbats have started having their splutering fits. Mark at Decision ’08 does what few would have the stomach for; mining the koolaid kids for the Top Ten Leftist Reactions To The Bolton Nomination (via MM) If you are prone to high blood pressure, please, leave that link alone. While that takes care of the blogging left, it still leaves the legislative left. (Quotes below from this AP Story)
Harry Reid – “At a time when we need to reassert our diplomatic power in the world, President Bush has decided to send a seriously flawed and weakened candidate to the United Nations. It’s an unnecessary result, and the latest abuse of power by the Bush White House. … Bolton arrives at the United Nations with a cloud hanging over his head.”
Sorry, Harry. Bolton is neither flawed or weakened by this appointment and it is far from an abuse of power.
Edward M. Kennedy – “The abuse of power and the cloak of secrecy from the White House continues. … It’s a devious maneuver that evades the constitutional requirement of Senate consent and only further darkens the cloud over Mr. Bolton’s credibility at the U.N.”
There’s that abuse of power line again. Leads me to believe that the number one tool of the left is the copy machine.
Barbara Mikulski – “Making this recess appointment is certainly the president’s right, but it is not right for America. Appointing John Bolton to the United Nations sends a terrible message to our intelligence professionals. It is the wrong signal for our intelligence reform efforts.”
I think you’re wrong about that, Babs, but I’m sure that it is the right signal to send the corrupt halls of the UN
Barack Obama – “John Bolton is the wrong person for the job and the decision to appoint him today will not serve American foreign policy well at all. … His history of inflammatory statements about the U.N. will also make it difficult for him to effectively advance U.S. security interests in New York and bring about necessary reforms to that institution.”
Good point, just 180 degrees out of reality.
And finally, John (why let the truth get in the way) Kerry (who served in Viet Nam, by the way) – “The president has the right to make this recess appointment, but it’s the wrong decision. It only diminishes John Bolton’s validity and leverage to secure America’s goals at the U.N. John Bolton has been rejected twice by the Senate to serve as our Ambassador to the United Nations. This is not the way to fill our most important diplomatic jobs.”
Funny thing is, he’s got a real BS sandwich here. Totally wrong analysis sandwiched between two true statements. Do I think that last statement is true? I sure do. An up or down vote would have been the better way, but if you can’t beat ‘em, obstruct ‘em is the new way of the left.
I won’t even go into TOM coverage. I just encourage Ambassador Bolton to go to work and clean up (and clean out) that mess as soon as you can.
UPDATE: Sister Toldjah has an in depth look at recess apointments and the infamous “abuse of power”.
